Free Webinar: Monday August 24th, 6.30pm

“Navigating A Level Chemistry: A Parent’s Guide to Building Teen Independence and Achieving Potential (without nagging!)

Learn how to support your teen through the A Level jump, build independent problem-solving skills, and provide the structure they need to reach their potential without the daily stress. I’ll explain some of the typical challenges most students face in the transition from GCSE to A Level – in particular the need to learn through mistakes and develop resilience and internal motivation. You’ll be able to ask questions, and I’ll provide parents with some practical strategies to help provide a supportive environment while maintaining high expectations. Students are also welcome to attend and I recommend you sit down to watch together!

I have very limited availability for regular weekly one to one tuition. In my experience, this is not actually the most effective use of an A Level student’s time – or their parent’s money! Instead, for the students in my group programme I offer the option to book an extra one to one session (paid for separately) if they need it – each month I share a booking link with a range of available times and days. If you are specifically looking for weekly one to one support, I may be able to accommodate your child if they are available at ‘off peak’ times, such as before 4pm on week days.

Year 13 classes are on Wednesday evenings, starting from September 16th (separate times for AQA and OCR A). Year 12 classes are on Tuesdays at 5.30pm, starting on 15th September. All classes are recorded; Year 13 students are also able to access the recordings for the Year 12 classes as a way to go back over previous content. There are three live sessions per year group each month; in the weeks without live classes students have an exam-style assessment, with the option to receive marking and personalised feedback.

AQA: 6–7pm | OCR A: 7–8pm

All classes are delivered on Zoom. Students access the classes through the website so links are kept secure, but they do not need any special software to do this. They can also access recordings through the website along with a bank of practice questions and other revision materials each week.

All students will have access to a random retrieval quiz, a specific topic-based quiz and practice questions each week via the website – it is strongly recommended that they do these to help prepare for the class and consolidate understanding. The materials will recap concepts they have learned in class, so that the focus of the live lessons is more on application and exam technique.

For the first half term, the focus is on consolidating prior knowledge and building on what students should already know (either from GCSE in the case of Year 12, or from Year 12 for Year 13 students). This means that all students will be able to get something out of the lessons, and the focus will be on applying these ideas to trickier exam questions or unfamiliar concepts, as well as linking ideas and building synoptic thinking skills. From the second half of the autumn term, we will continue to follow a set weekly timetable of topics, with feedback from students on their priorities. The class timetable and topic lists will be on the website, along with the practice materials, at the start of each month.

Each month includes a deliberate break in live classes. This is partly to help students catch up with materials and to accommodate school holidays, but it is also to allow students time to complete an assessment exercise. Each month I provide an unseen ‘exam-style’ assessment that covers the topics from that month. The assessment takes around one hour or less to complete; students in Materclass Plus have the option of receiving marking and personalised feedback on their assessment.

The Masterclass Programme costs between ÂŁ40-65 per month for Year 12 students or between ÂŁ70-95 per month for Year 13 students. You can find out more about what each membership includes on the main masterclass page.
