New Online Courses Starting in August and September for A Level Chemistry Students

I’m excited to announce, that, following the success of the 21 Day A Level Chemistry Boot Camp in July, I’ll be running three more online courses to help A Level Chemistry students during August and September:

Head Start to A Level Chemistry

A Level Chemistry can be a challenging subject, especially after the interruption to education that happened this year. This course will make sure you hit the ground running, going back over the most important aspects of your GCSE and ensuring a more secure foundation to start your A Level studies.

For three weeks you will receive daily emails containing video tutorials, study tips, challenges and practice questions with carefully explained video answers. You will be able to send in any questions you have and there will be a live Q&A session on Zoom at the end of each week.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Atomic structure and bonding
  • Mole calculations (including titrations)
  • Types of reaction and types of equation (ionic, half equations etc)
  • Energy changes in reactions
  • Organic chemistry and polymers

As well as this, we will look at the common pitfalls that students new to A Level Chemistry often face, as well as how to step up your exam technique to reach the more demanding standards of A Level-style questions.

A Level Chemistry Boot Camp (Year 1)

This course is designed to improve your understanding, boost your motivation and help you study smarter, not harder. You will receive tips, video tutorials, practice questions and video answers and explanations to your inbox every day. You can send in questions about any of the content covered and have them answered in a Q&A session at the end of each week.

The course is aimed at Year 12 students looking to improve their understanding and application of Chemistry, and prepare for their return to school in autumn. There will be a heavy focus on exam-style practice questions with detailed explanations, as well as helping students to spot links between different areas of the syllabus in preparation for more synoptic exam questions.

Main topics covered:

  • Calculations (particularly more open-ended calculations, and those involving experimental techniques)
  • Energy changes – especially Hess Cycles
  • Bonding, structure and intermolecular forces
  • Redox, oxidation numbers and half equations
  • Organic chemistry, particularly isomerism, mechanisms and oxidation of alcohols

The content will be applicable to all UK A Level and IB syllabuses. Year 13 students are also welcome to join – there will be a similar course for the second year of A Level starting on September 1st (see below).

A Level Chemistry Boot Camp (Year 2)

This course follows the same format as the Boot Camp for Year 1, but covers the second year A Level content. As above, you will receive tips, video tutorials, practice questions and other assignments to your inbox every day. You can send in questions about any of the content covered and have them answered in a Q&A session at the end of each week.

The course is aimed at students who have completed both years of A Level Chemistry content and are looking to improve their confidence and exam technique before the autumn exam ‘retake’ session. The content will be applicable to all UK A Level and IB syllabuses.

Topics covered include:

  • Equilibrium (including Kc, Kp, Ka and redox equilibria
  • Entropy and further enthalpy changes (including lattice enthalpy and Born Haber cycles)
  • Kinetics – the rate equation and Arrhenius equation
  • Transition metals and further redox chemistry
  • Organic chemistry: focus on polymers, synthesis techniques and synoptic questions
  • Spectroscopy and analytical techniques
