Free online class for half term – the A* approach to A level chemistry
Please note this class has already happened! You can catch the recording at the bottom of the page – to make sure you don’t miss out on future online classes, make sure you are signed up to my free mailing list for students and teachers.
I give a free online class during October half term most years, and 2025 is no exception.
I don’t like using terms like ‘how to get an A” in chemistry A level’ – any student taking chemistry should know full well that you can’t approach it with a quick fix, study hack, ‘do these things and you are guaranteed to get an A*’ mentality. It takes effort, it’s a challenging subject and less than 10% of students achieve the top grade each year.
However, I have been teaching students this subject for a couple of decades. Many things have changed in that time, particularly the use of technology, but some things about the way the top-scoring students revise, think and approach the subject are consistent across that time.
How do you get an A/A* grade in A Level chemistry?
Surprise, there isn’t a single answer! But I would say there are a few things that set students apart and make me, as a teacher and tutor, more convinced of their success:
- Consistent, EFFECTIVE practice of the basics
- A willingness to be uncomfortable and not know the answer right away
- Synoptic thinking – making links between different topic areas (and to other subjects such as biology, maths or physics)
- Attention to detail – spotting clues in the exam question, using specific vocabulary and paying attention to units and significant figures
- Seeking feedback and acting on it – actively asking questions and learning from mark schemes and worked examples
How can I revise chemistry to get an A* grade?
I’m not going to say that EVERYONE can get an A* grade. That would kind of defeat the purpose of having a grade system! But there are changes you can make to the way you study, revise and practice exam questions that will make a big difference.
I’ll be writing more articles on this over the next few months, but if you are an A Level chemistry student looking for that top grade, why not sign up for my free online class in half term?
When is the online class and who is it for?
The class will be on Tuesday 28th October at 3pm – this should be during half term for most students, but if you can’t make it the class will also be recorded. Places are limited in the live class, so please only sign up if you know you can attend. If you want to also be updated on chemistry revision materials, new videos and other online classes make sure you are also signed up to my free weekly mailing list.
The class is suitable for students in Year 12 and Year 13, although more relevant (and urgent!) for Year 13 students. Teachers can also sign up but I would prefer if you watched the recording, to allow more students to attend the class. It is suitable for any exam board, and although it is aimed at students who are working at a higher level and aiming for A/A* grade, the strategies and ideas will help students at any level.
Sorry if you missed the class – you can catch up with a recording below!
