About Course

This course puts together some resources, notes, practice questions and quizzes to help students make a successful transition between GCSE and A Level Chemistry. The materials have been designed for students taking any of the major exam boards for UK qualifications.

The course is free to sign up and you can keep access to the materials, so you can come back to the lessons when you get to a relevant part of the course. You can also repeat quizzes to see how you’re progressing.

Course Content

Atomic structure and bonding
There are some fundamental ideas from GCSE that will be built on during the A Level course, but many students have misconceptions in this area! This module will help you be more specific with your language and chemical explanations.

  • Atomic structure and the periodic table (GCSE Level)
  • Atomic Structure – Practice Questions
  • Bonding and structure quiz (GCSE level)
  • Bonding and Structure – Practice Questions

Chemical calculations (quantitative chemistry)
There are a LOT of calculations in A Level chemistry! You will probably start your A Level course covering these and the pace moves quickly, so regular practice of quantitative chemistry will make a big difference.

Formula and equation skills
In this module you will practice some key skills in different types of chemical formulae and equations. Some of the ideas might be challenging, but you can come back to them for extra practice during the first year of your A Level course.

Chemical reactions, redox and reactivity
This might seem an odd title - isn't all of chemistry about chemical reactions? While this is true, one thing I've found is that when students start A Level they try to rote learn every single reaction and equation they come across (or they just assume they don't need to learn any of them!). The purpose of this module is to spot patterns in types of chemical reaction, and how to write equations to represent them.
