Welcome to CK Chemistry
I’m Claire CK and I’ve been teaching and tutoring chemistry for 20 years. Before I went into teaching I studied Biochemistry and Chemistry at Southampton University, where I obtained a double first class degree. I then completed a research-based Masters degree in biochemistry at Leicester University before moving to the University of Oxford to do my teacher training degree.
I qualified in 2006 and since then I have worked in a range of different schools including state secondary and sixth form colleges, an international school in Dubai and an independent selective entry school in Southampton. I have also worked as a teacher trainer, delivering professional development courses and training days for science teachers as part of the Science Learning Centre at Southampton University.
I’ve been tutoring A Level chemistry and science GCSE since my undergraduate degree and have always had a passion for supporting individual students – particularly those aiming for competitive universities and degrees such as Oxbridge and medicine. I moved to online tutoring five years ago, which has allowed me to work with students all over the world including the US, Asia and Europe. In 2023 I decided to finally step out of my part time classroom teaching role to concentrate fully on my online tuition and making resources for A Level chemistry students.

I now offer one to one and group tuition for A Level and IB chemistry (along with some GCSE and KS3 science). I’m a friendly and approachable tutor and I understand that even though I am passionate about my subject, others might not feel the same! My rich background has enabled me to work with many different students, including those who struggle with anxiety, autism, ADHD and other educational needs. My particular strength is in making students feel at ease, fostering an environment where they develop the confidence and self belief to tackle problems independently. I am extremely patient and will always think of another way to explain a concept or build on pre-existing ideas, which I know from experience is not always possible in a busy classroom environment.
I use my experience as an examiner to enhance my teaching – I have been marking A Level papers for as long as I have been teaching and find it a useful way to stay up to date with current specifications. I also produce online teaching and learning resources including videos, practice questions, predicted papers and quizzes – you can check out my A Level resources here.
